Global pain-point research

Nineteen problems research careers live with. We measured each one.

We spoke to students, postgraduates, faculty, research staff and nonprofit teams across six countries on four continents. Ten are critical and almost completely unsolved.

Methodology

Six countries. Four continents. Real conversations.

Mar–May 2026. 59 semi-structured interviews, 6 focus groups, a 1,200-response survey — across the University of Toronto, Oxford, TU Munich, NUS, the University of São Paulo, the University of Cape Town and four more institutions.

Severity: critical

The ten we lead with.

These make students and researchers anywhere nod once and tell you the time it personally cost them.

Critical

Pain #01

Study-abroad agents that take fees and disappear

Who feels it: Prospective international students applying to the UK, US, Canada, Germany, Australia

Education ministries and consumer regulators worldwide warn about unlicensed 'education agents' charging $500–5,000 with no admission or visa to show for it. Stories surface weekly on Reddit, X and international-student forums.

Veridanth service: Veridanth is a service company, not a marketplace — our in-house teams deliver, with milestone sign-off at each stage. When a project needs a niche specialty we don't keep on staff, we bring in a partner vetted by government ID and verified credentials. No disappearing agents.

Critical

Pain #02

Postgrad students stuck on methodology with no one to ask

Who feels it: MPhil, MSc, MBA, PhD candidates wherever supervision is stretched thin

Supervisors carry 20–60 students and respond in weeks. Students resort to group chats, paying informal 'data analysts' $80–300 for SPSS runs they can't interpret or defend.

Veridanth: Our AI co-pilot is trained on real theses, institutional rubrics across grading systems, and common defence questions. It walks you through chapter-by-chapter, recommends a methodology, and only escalates to a paid human expert when you actually need one.

Critical

Pain #03

Researchers paying predatory journals because they can't tell them apart

Who feels it: Faculty under publish-or-perish pressure; PhD students

Hundreds of thousands of papers worldwide sit in known predatory outlets (Beall's list, Cabells). Promotions get blocked when committees flag the journals. Authors have paid USD 200–800 in APCs to journals that vanish.

Veridanth: Journal Radar — paste a target journal and Veridanth scores it across DOAJ, Scopus, Web of Science, JCR, Beall, retraction history, time-to-decision, and APC vs. impact. We refuse to recommend predatory venues.

Critical

Pain #04

Application fees, journal APCs and test fees that fail at the payment step

Who feels it: Every international applicant paying fees across borders

Currency controls, card caps and cross-border declines mean GRE, IELTS, UCAS, Common App and APC payments routinely fail for applicants in many countries. Some pay 15–30% to informal 'middlemen' to handle it.

Veridanth service: Veridanth Pay — pay by card via Stripe and we settle verified application, exam and APC fees on your behalf at a transparent margin (3.5%), with a receipt for your records.

Critical

Pain #05

No reliable map of scholarships you're actually eligible for

Who feels it: Students who only hear about deadlines after they pass

Social-media groups recycle expired links. Many 'scholarships' quietly exclude your passport or level. Applicants miss the less-famous gems (Vanier, Gates Cambridge, Commonwealth Shared, DAAD EPOS, Erasmus+).

Veridanth: The atlas — universities and funding on one globe: a curated, deadline-aware catalogue of scholarships, fellowships, grants and exchanges, filtered by field, level, stipend and passport eligibility, beside the admissions cycles of the places that award them.

Critical

Pain #06

Supervisors who go silent for months

Who feels it: Every postgrad student with an overloaded supervisor

Heavy teaching loads + admin + private practice. Students lose semesters waiting. Drop-out and time-to-degree both balloon.

Veridanth service: On-demand Second Supervisor — book a verified PhD-level reviewer for a fixed-fee chapter review in 72 hours. Not a replacement for your supervisor — a parallel safety net.

Critical

Pain #07

A degree run across a dozen disconnected apps

Who feels it: Undergraduates and postgraduates juggling coursework, research and applications

Notes in one app, deadlines in another, readings in a third, references in a fourth. Nothing carries between them, so the same context is re-entered every week and work is lost at exactly the moments it matters.

Veridanth: One platform for the whole degree: a multi-year degree plan, per-term deadlines, lecture notes, reading lists, revision and research studios that share a single context — brief once, and every surface already knows.

Severity: high & medium

Nine more we're solving.

Generic SOPs and personal statements that get rejected

High

Veridanth: AI Statement Studio — interviews you in your own words, drafts to the specific scholarship rubric (Chevening leadership, Fulbright impact, DAAD development relevance), then a human reviewer with award history polishes it.

Informal data analysts who can't defend their own outputs

High

Veridanth: Every analysis on Veridanth ships with a Methods Memo — assumptions checked, test justified in plain English, an alternative if assumptions fail, and a 30-minute defense-prep call with the analyst.

Early-career researchers shut out of Wellcome, NIH, ERC grants

High

Veridanth: Grant Co-pilot — funder-specific templates (Wellcome, NIH R01/Fogarty, ERC / Horizon Europe, NSF, NSERC, IDRC), AI critique against the actual reviewer rubric, plus matched mentors who have won that exact call.

Turnitin / GPTZero false positives wrecking honest students

High

Veridanth: Authorship Trail — Veridanth Docs records keystroke timeline, revision history and source-of-ideas log so you can prove your work is yours. We also coach you to use AI ethically without triggering flags.

IELTS / TOEFL / GRE prep is unaffordable and uneven

High

Still open: Not yet answered. Homework Studio can drill practice questions you supply, but Veridanth has no test-prep product: no diagnostic, no band-descriptor scoring, no mock speaking. We would rather say so than describe one.

Schools running attendance, fees and grades on paper

High

Veridanth service: School Management Tools tier — attendance, fees, grades and parent comms via SMS/WhatsApp, sized and priced for independent schools.

Researchers can't build the custom field apps they actually need

High

Veridanth service: Research Data-Collection Apps tier — custom offline-first mobile apps, supervisor dashboards, longitudinal panel tools.
